Motorcyclist with a passion for speed

“You really have to have a passion for speed to enjoy riding bikes”

Riaan Buys has been a biker since his schooling days. He might not have been able to afford the BMW S1000RR motorbike he now owns, but his passion for speed has grown since his younger years.

He is a family man and has two boys who have already started to acquire a passion for the life of a motorcyclist.

Riaan feels that just because you have a fast or expensive bike does not mean you are a good rider. “All these guys who speed in town should go to a track like Redstar where speeding is much safer and you learn your bike.”

Riaan has attended various classes on riding a bike and has learned how to handle different situations. He is a busy man as he is a project leader at Canvas & Tent and is often out of town, so when he gets home, his family comes first – but he likes to go riding as much as he can.

His wife encourages him in this passion he has for speed. She is keen on riding off-road with him and their children.
Riaan says that all his spare time and money goes into his hobby, and it is an expensive hobby to maintain. He adds that it’s about going fast and gaining experience on the track. “You really have to have a passion for speed to enjoy riding bikes,” smiles Riaan.

Although it is such an expensive sport to pursue, if you have the passion, it is worth every cent. Riaan is planning on taking part in a four to eight-hour race which will be held at Phakisa. This is a race one would do with one’s friends, as it is a group-friendly amateur race.

Riaan is not part of any biking club, and says it would be great if things got to the stage where people could just ride together and enjoy the sport.
