Building bridges reaches new heights at Sarel

Bridge building competition
Sarel Cilliers High school again took part in the annual SAICE Bridge Building competition held in Harrismith on February 25. Sarel entered three teams for the competition and did exceptionally well.
The teams started designing, drawing out and building their bridges at 9 am and they had to finish at 4.30 pm.
After that the bridges are judged for aesthetic value and they also get weighed, as the weight of the bridge is one of the judging criteria. The lighter the better.
The team consisting of C Mare, K Mncwango and S Msane (Gr 11 Learners) ended in the 9th place. Their bridge carried a weight of 15kg. J Kriel, N Storbeck and J van Deventer (Gr 10 learners) came in 4th with a weight of 20kg. D Ramdeyal, W du Plooy and N Nyembe (Gr 10 Learners) finished second with a weight of 25kg.
A great achievement for all three teams indeed!
Flying High
Mbuso Mncube and Arnold Madawaenda were first and second in high jump for boys u/19 at the Umzinyathi trials. Mbuso jumped a whopping 1.9m! The school trusts that he will smash the record next year. Sarel is very proud of him.
Sarel hockey team wins Spar Tournament
Sarel Cilliers is the first school since 2011 to beat Ferrum in the Spar tournament. The tournament took place on February 27, at St Dominics to participate in the NKZN hockey tournament.
Sarel arrived as the underdogs, but walked away victorious with the coveted trophy in hand! Naledi Ndala stopped many a ball, especially during the eight second play-offs. Megan Franz, Nikita Ramdayal and Bongeka Lushaba scored.
The whole team played as a single unit to bring back the trophy that Ferrum had won since the conception of the tournament in 2011. In the finals, they won 3-1 against Pionier in the eight second play-offs.
The team are going to Durban in July to take part in the KZN Spar tournament. Thank you, girls, for playing your hearts out. It worked! Sarel is so proud of you!

Rugby in Pietermaritzburg
The rugby teams participated in Pietermaritzburg on February 26. The first team beat Westville High 10-0, which is a wonderful achievement.
The second team drew 0-0 against the first team of Greytown, and the u/16 team lost against Voortrekker High.
Support the first team today from 3:30 pm as they take on Kearsney College from Durban at Sarel Cilliers.
On March 5 Sarel Cilliers will take on Empangeni High School in rugby, netball, hockey and chess. The action begins at 9 am at Sarel Cilliers High School. Matches will take place on the A and B fields. Chess will take place at Brandfort.
All coaches and staff members are invited for refreshments at Brandfort on arrival and after the matches.
