uThukela urges residents to register to vote

uThukela District Mayor Dudu Mazibuko urges all South African citizens, young and old, to go and register to vote on the first open registration weekend of March 5 and 6.

By registering to vote, you are saying “I want to participate in securing our hard-earned democracy”.

We must also remember that voting is not just exercising your rights, but also offers citizens a chance to vote the right people into office; people who will work for the community.

To make sure this happens, citizens must register and also check that their details are correct on the register’s roll.

“We also encourage those who have not collected their Identity Documents (IDs) to go and collect them at the Department of Home Affairs,” says Mayor Mazibuko.

To make sure you are registered and to find out where you are registered, you can check your status online, or SMS your ID number to 32810, or visit your local Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) offices. By law, you can also apply for a special vote if you cannot travel to your voting station because you are physically infirm or disabled, etc.

“We are calling upon our youth to take part and register to vote. The youth are the future of our country and it is important that they play a huge role in voting to elect who should represent them in office,” concludes Mayor Mazibuko.
