Motorists question validity of parking fines in CBD
'Why should we pay parking fine when the law is not equally applied?"
The issuing of the dreaded R40 ‘pink tickets’ on car windscreens has risen the ire of motorists who have cried ‘unfairness’.
Hawkers, selling fruit, fish, CDs and other goods use parking bays to sell goods from their cars/trailers and do so with impunity.
This, despite a by-law in place that prevents people from operating a business from a public parking space.
Motorists who have been ticketed by traffic police told the Courier that the meters are ‘just tourist attractions and should be taken away’.
“The law is not applied evenly… hawkers have filled up the pavements on Victoria Street, outside ABSA Bank, and on Willson Street, across from Jacksons Store. Hawkers make noise in town, selling CDs yet we cannot even park outside our own businesses without getting a fine,” said one irate Beaconsfield Street business owner who preferred not to named.
The Traffic Department has been contacted for comment.
