BUSINESSES and individuals, at this point in time, are under pressure to adapt to the current water crisis in order to stay afloat, as it were.PG Glass is pushing the envelope in this regard and really stepping up to the plate to do their bit for the community, setting an example for those who are keen to save water in these trying times of drought and uncertainty.

One thing that is certain, however, is that Jan-Daniel Kruger and the staff at PG Glass have found an effective and inspiring way of saving and recycling the water used at their car wash in Heeren Street.

According to Kruger, they no longer use the municipal water supply at their offices at all, since implementing the new water saving system, which was installed at the beginning of January, following a meeting between car wash owners and the municipality, where the water crisis and its effect on their businesses was discussed.

Rolling with the punches and adapting to the situation, Kruger seized the opportunity to make a difference. The roof of the building was adapted and downpipes changed to catch rainwater, which runs off into two 2 500 litre tanks at either side of the building. One of these tanks is then utilised for supplying water to the office and the other for the car wash.

The collection and storage of rainwater has proven to be a far more cost effective and economically viable solution than the pricey alternative of having a borehole drilled.

The water used for the car wash is run through a filtration system, allowing it to be recycled and used many times, saving thousands of litres of the precious commodity.

“We hope this inspires others to save water and to use it sparingly in these difficult times,” added Kruger. “We will continue with this system even after the water crisis is over. This is something we could teach our children to use in the future too.”
