Ladysmith police and Ladysmith TRT recently arrested four people in separate incidents for possession of drugs.
Acting on information received, Ladysmith TRT officers pounced on a store in the Umbulwane area on Wednesday afternoon. During a search of the premises, police found 36 rounds of ammunition for which the owner of the store had no licence.
More searching turned up 30 mandrax tablets and a packet of several dagga parcels weighing between 1 and 2kg. The street value of the mandrax is around R1800 and the dagga around R3000.
The 37-year-old suspect appeared in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, where he was granted bail of R1500. He is to appear in court again on April 4.
He faces charges of possession of unlicensed ammunition, possession of mandrax and possession of dagga.
Three others who were arrested by Ladysmith police officers appeared in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court on Friday on charges of possession of dagga.
On Thursday at about 4pm, 29-year-old man was arrested at the Department of Correctional Services after personnel there discovered a prisoner in possession of dagga.
Earlier that morning, police arrested a 26-year-old man along the Newcastle road after he was also found in possession of dagga and cash.
This was followed by the arrest of a 24-year-old man in Bombay Road. He too was found in possession of dagga.
The total weight of the dagga is around 5kg and the estimated street value is around R7500.
