Parents chase teacher from school

A large crowd of angry, frustrated parents chased an educator from the premises of ML Sultan Primary School in Kandahar Avenue earlier this week.
The parents are fed up with the perceived negligence of the educator, who evidently often leaves the children unattended in the classroom and disappears for hours. This problem has allegedly been going on for years. Parents have complained to school management about the problem and say they received no feedback.
Parents are concerned about the safety of their children, with no adult supervision in the classroom.

On Monday morning, the parents called a meeting with the school governing body, determined to solve the problem once and for all. The educator was at the school premises, but left because of fears for his safety.
“The time is now and now is the time,” said one frustrated parent.
The Ladysmith Gazette spoke to the principal of the school and governing body members.
According to ML Sultan Primary School principal Mrs Iyer, the parents wanted a decision to be taken to remove the educator, who has been accused of constantly taking time off during teaching hours for union matters.
“The parents’ grievances were heard at the meeting and we decided that union matters should not be a valid reason to take time off during school time. The children are, of course, our main priority at the school,” said Mrs Iyer.
“Forward with quality education, out with corruption,” added a governing body member.
For the record, the teacher has not been fired from the school, as further investigations will take place. The Department of Education will make the final decision.
To date, the teacher has not been back to the school.
