Update: Female rhino poachers will spend tonight in prison

Ladysmith magistrate throws the book at rhino poachers

The two women found guilty of conspiracy to hunt rhinos and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition will serve at least two years in prison.

32-year-old Confidence ‘Angel’ Mlambo and 22-year-old Nokwanda Khumalo appeared in the Regional Court today (Friday) for sentencing.

Mlambo was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment for illegal possession of a firearm and a further six months for possession of ammunition. In addition, she was sentenced to three years for conspiracy to hunt rhinos.  On all counts, half of the imprisonment is suspended, making her effective jail term only two years.

Khumalo was sentenced to four years behind bars for illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm and a further six months for possession of ammunition. She received three years for conspiracy to hunt rhinos. On all counts, half of the imprisonment is suspended, making her effective jail term also only two years.

Both women, smartly dressed, showed signs of relief at not being given a heftier sentenced by Magistrate Visagie as they were led away by police officers to holding cells.

A social worker has been assigned to take care of the children of both the accused.
