Municipality holds International Women’s Day celebrations

Emnambithi/Ladysmith Municipality’s Gender Office, along with Deputy Mayor Sindi Mfusi, hosted an International Women’s Day celebration at Tsakane Community Hall on Tuesday. Various women’s organisations and religious groups were invited to be part of the event.

Women gathered to talk about issues pertaining to them and shared ideas on how to stand up for women as citizens of South Africa. Under discussion was “claiming their rights, recognition and respect for the work they do at home, in the workplace and in the community on a daily basis”.

Deputy Mayor Mfusi stated that women should have full and equal participation in the creation of a non-sexist, non-racist democratic society. She also said that democracy and human rights are concepts that are meaningful for women, and they must address all the historic subordination and oppression. “Women must participate in, and shape the nature and system of our democracy.”

One of the reverends present at the event, Rev Mtshali, urged women to pray for this country and their children in order to build a better world. He also led intercession prayers for unemployment, poverty, substance abuse, teenage pregnancy and gender-based violence.
