Police in KwaZulu-Natal arrested a total of 33 suspects for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition between February 21 and 28.

Police officers from various clusters conducted operations aimed at eradicating the proliferation of firearms in the province. These clusters include UThungulu, UThukela, Umzinyathi, Umkhanyakude, Ilembe, EThekwini Outer South and EThekwini Outer North as well as EThekwini Inner South and EThekwini Inner North.

A total of 29 unlicensed firearms were seized with an assortment of 100 rounds of ammunition. These suspects were charged for being in possession of unlicensed firearms at the respective police stations and they have appeared in various magistrate’s courts in the province.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended police for the arrests and recovery of firearms.
“We, as the South African Police Service are committed to ensuring that we live in a safe and secure environment. All these firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing to determine if they were used in the commission of other crimes in the country,” she said.
