Grandmother under house arrest for child abuse
She was charged and convicted of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm
Nonkululeko Dagney Lurae (62) was sentenced to 12 months correctional supervision (house arrest) for using a sjambok to punish her 7-year-old granddaughter.
The young child sustained wounds over her arms, legs and back.
A teacher at her school noticed the injuries and set off an investigation into the alleged child abuse.
The accused was very remorseful and accepted that her behaviour was inexcusable.
She was charged and convicted of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm.
The sentence was handed down on March 3 at the Glencoe Magistrates Court.
FCS Unit Commander, Captain Fuller, urges all parents and adults to use alternate means of punishment and behavioural discipline with the youth who are meant to be protected and loved.
“Extreme measures such as use of weapons like a sjambok is not the answer and it will only damage those fragile little minds and bodies,” she added.
Captain Fuller also urged the public to report suspected child abuse.
“We commend the caring teacher who alerted the Department of Social Development who in turn reported the matter to the Glencoe SAPS.”
