Rapist grandson sentenced to 25 years

A man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for raping and robbing his 72-year-old grandmother.
The man, who can’t be named to protect the identity of the victim, could not give a reason for his actions when pleading guilty. The 72-year-old grandmother’s life changed forever on the night of November 24, 2011. After going to bed, she was woken at 4 am by the sound of someone entering her room.
She could not recognise the intruder as it was dark and his face was not visible.
He then assaulted and raped her numerous times, then robbed her of her pension money before fleeing the scene. A case was opened after the victim reported the matter and fingerprints were taken from the scene.
A fingerprint lifted from the scene sounded alarm bells when it was linked to another case. He was found in prison and subsequently charged with rape and robbery.

A DNA reference sample was taken from him and sent for comparison to the evidence collected from the victim, which turned out to be a match. Detectives then got a major shock when they realized that the culprit was in fact the victim’s grandson.
Warrant Officer Khambule of the Dundee Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, was tasked with breaking the shocking news to the victim.
She broke down upon hearing the news but decided to continue with the case in court.
The grandson first denied the charges against him, but as the case progressed in court, he decided to plead guilty due to the overwhelming evidence linking him to the crimes.

He was sentenced by the Dundee Regional Court to 20 years imprisonment for rape and 10 years imprisonment for robbery, of which 5 years were suspended. In total he will serve 25 years behind bars. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
Captain Fuller who is the commander of the FCS Unit in Dundee has expressed her sympathy toward the victim but is thankful that she could receive justice after waiting for a suspect to be apprehended.
“It is a victory for us as a Unit every time a perpetrator is removed from society.” She also expressed her gratitude and pride towards Warrant Officer Khambule.
