Sewage floods yard, constantly

"I can't sleep, cook and even eat at my home because the smell is unbearable"

Gwennie van Niekerk is furious about sewage flowing from the road into her yard in Albrecht Street.

She says her two-year-old grandson can’t even play outside now due to the terrible stink and non-stop flow of raw effluent.

She claims to have phoned uThukela over 50 times, asking for help, and most of the time they just disconnect her call.

The situation is so bad that the sewer water floods her yard all the time. This is very unhygienic for her and her grandson.

“I can’t sleep, cook and even eat at my home because the smell is unbearable. How can uThukela expect me to live in these conditions?” says an angry Mrs van Niekerk.

She phoned Councillor Abbas Warasally and Pieter du Bruyn for help, and they have since also phoned uThukela numerous times, but to date nothing has been done.

“I am very disappointed! I personally contacted uThukela and they did nothing. I challenge the mayor to come and have lunch at this house and see if she can eat here,” says Cllr Warasally.
