Emergency service stakeholders held a safety demonstration at the sports grounds on the corner of Hospital and Voortrekker streets on Friday, March 11.
Pupils from Newcastle Senior Primary were greeted by firefighters, SAPS K9-Unit, traffic officials and ER24 ambulance services who taught them about the important role they play in the community.
Pupils enjoyed the practical demonstrations by the K9-Unit and firefighters, showing what a day in their shoes was like.
Sergeant Lionel Harry from Newcastle SAPS said it was important to educate pupils from a young age how to protect themselves against crime and to avoid dangerous situations.
“The children should know what to do when confronted with danger, and hopefully through our demonstrations, we’ll be preventing them from leading a life of crime in the future,” he said.
Assistant Superintendent, Richardo van der Plank from the Traffic Department, taught pupils basic road safety rules and explained the implications when those rules were not adhered to. ER24 and Protection Services also demonstrated their work and taught pupils emergency numbers.
