VIDEO: Sensitising the community about Multi Drug Resistant TB

Placards, a big banner as well as slogans helped convey the message about MDR TB this morning as hospital staff marched from Lorne Street to Alfred Street

Did you know that Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of deaths in South Africa? TB claims around 60 000 lives in 2010 and in 2011 the World Health Organisation reported that there were approximately 500 000 active cases of TB.

To sensitise locals about TB as well as Multi Drug Resistant (MDR) TB, staff from Estcourt Hospital held an awareness day today.

MDR TB is a form of TB caused by bacteria (germs) that are resistant to the usual drugs used to treat “ordinary” TB. In other words, the normal drugs that we use to treat “ordinary” TB will not work.

Placards, a big banner as well as slogans helped convey the message about MDR TB this morning as hospital staff marched from Lorne Street to Alfred Street.

Shouts of #MDRMustFall and Down with TB were heard by all who the march passed.
