Bomb squad rushes to remove grenades

Despite the worn condition of the grenades, they may still be active

Partially-buried grenades were found yesterday (Wednesday) at a business premises in Centenary Road.

A member of the community alerted Ladysmith police about a suspicious-looking item spotted on the premises.

On arrival, police found three partially-buried grenades.

The Newcastle Bomb Disposal Squad was called in to safely remove them. Despite their worn condition, they may still be active and could date back to anywhere between 1915 and 1970.

The grenades will be safely disposed of by SAPS bomb disposal experts. It is unknown how or when the grenades found their way onto the property.
