Taxi kingpin possibly linked to multiple murders
Dlamini has been linked to taxi violence in the Bergville, Pomeroy and Estcourt areas
A man appearing in court in Gauteng was arrested by the Hawks over the weekend. He was then transported to Ladysmith under heavy police guard.
The 49-year-old man is allegedly a taxi hit-man whom insiders have claimed is a major kingpin linked to taxi violence. At this point, it is not believed he is linked to the Gamede / Mabaso taxi war.
He has already been whisked away from the area under heavy police guard in fear that he is a prime target. He has currently been positively linked to the murder of Delani Mathonsi and the attempted murder of Mkululeni Nzimande, who were shot at on the Pomeroy Main Road on September 16. Mathonsi, a taxi owner, died at the scene.
Hawks Lieutenant Simphiwe Mhlongo confirmed the arrest of 49-year-old Zwakushino Dlamini. He, however, could not confirm his link to 56 further counts of murder. Sources close to the investigation stress that Dlamini is definitely a taxi hit-man kingpin and the likelihood that he is linked to more taxi murders goes without saying. They stress that as the investigation delves deeper, he could be linked to even more taxi hits.
Dlamini was in court facing charges of armed robbery in Gauteng when members of the Hawks (an elite police special crimes investigation unit) arrested him in connection with the Pomeroy murder and attempted murder. He was then transported to Ladysmith under heavy police guard.
He appeared in court on Tuesday and will be back in Ladysmith on April 26 for a bail application.
He has been linked to taxi violence in the Bergville, Pomeroy and Estcourt areas.
The arrest follows close on the heels of last week’s double murder of two Klipriver Taxi Association employees who were gunned down in cold blood as they were ambushed on the Peacetown road.
