5 robbers killed in gun battle with police
One policeman was injured and rushed to hospital

Five suspects who robbed a supermarket in Estcourt were fatally wounded during a shoot-out with police near Mooi River yesterday afternoon (Sunday).
Officers attached to the Hawks, Crime Intelligence, Task Force and Durban K9 Unit were rushing to the scene of a business robbery when they met the suspects along the R103 main road, travelling in a Toyota Quantum. The officers signalled for the Quantum to stop.
Instead of obeying the order from police, the robbers began shooting at the men in blue, before abandoning their vehicle and trying to flee on foot, all the while shooting at the police.
The officers retaliated, shooting and fatally wounding five suspects aged between 28 and 55 years old.
One policeman was injured and rushed to hospital.
Five firearms (comprising one AK-47, one R5 rifle and three 9mm pistols), 60 live rounds of ammunition for various firearms, boxes of cigarettes and airtime which had allegedly been stolen during the robbery were found stashed inside the vehicle.
Another vehicle which was allegedly used by another two men during the robbery was found abandoned just outside Estcourt. The search is on for these two suspects, who are believed to have made off with an undisclosed sum of money.
