International Women's Day is the story of ordinary women as the makers of history, and is rooted in the centuries-old struggle of women emancipation and equal footing with men
uThukela District Municipality held and celebrated International Women’s Day in the Echachaza area under the global theme for 2016, which is ‘Pledge for Parity’.
The aim was for individuals to take a concrete step to help achieve gender parity more quickly. This would be by pledging to help women and girls achieve their ambitions and calling for gender-balanced leadership.
Various women – including political parties, community, business leaders, as well as leading educators, entrepreneurs, Omama Bamajukujuku and women in rural areas – were invited to take part in the event.

The messages given at the event were mainly focused on various issues such as improvement of the portrayal of women in rural areas, the importance of education and career opportunities, the importance of women in society and their influences, and issues that affect them.
All women at the event were encouraged to work together and build each other in every way. “International Women’s Day is not just about highlighting the acknowledged imbalances across social, economic, cultural and political grounds, but also about celebrating the successes of women in all those spheres,” said Cllr N Sibiya. She also urged all women to work together and help each other to build their own businesses, and not to depend on hand-outs.
In South Africa, we also celebrate National Women’s Day in August annually to commemorate the great women’s march of 1956, where women marched to the Union Buildings to protest against the carrying of pass books.
Women at the event received small presents from non-government organisation (NGO) Qhakaza Mbokondo.
