‘Mnikathi disrespects us!’

Director of Town Planning, Dalisu Zulu, implied that a resolution was in sight, despite the absence of Acting Municipal Manager, AB Mnikathi, who is believed to have been attending a meeting in Durban at the time of the foreseen outburst.

DISGRUNTLED municipal workers embarked on an illegal strike at the municipal building in Market Street today.

Strike 5

Feeling disrespected and brushed aside by management, workers voiced their distaste for the disdain with which they feel they are being treated, chanting, “Mnikathi disrespects us!” outside of the building.

Strike 1

According to witnesses at the scene of the protest, workers stormed the building this morning, disrupting a meeting and holding staff hostage until their list of demands was acknowledged. Union representatives met with municipal officials, who had set up a task team to deal with the workers’ demands.

Strike 4

Director of Town Planning, Dalisu Zulu, implied that a resolution was in sight, despite the absence of Acting Municipal Manager, AB Mnikathi, who is believed to have been attending a meeting in Durban at the time of the foreseen outburst.

Strike 3

Although the strike was not of a violent nature, police were present at the scene to keep the crowd under control.

Strike 2

According to AfriForum’s Andrè Van Der Walt, who was present in the initial stages of the strike and alerted authorities, municipal workers are believed to have cut off the water supply to town and sabotaged the Electrical Supply Room at the waterworks to ensure that water cannot be restored, but this has not been officially confirmed as yet.

“SAPS have been informed and we are working on it,” stated Van Der Walt.
