SA teams finish as winners

Fun, sand, cricket, excellent hospitality, amazing food, superb cricket facilities and state-of-the-art schools were some of the gems in the success of the United Arab Emirates 5 Nations Schools cricket tournament.
Our own Faroek Seedat was part of the trip as head coach, logistics co-ordinator and facilitator, as he led four teams on tour from March 20 to 31. Participating national teams included India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, UAE and South Africa.
The Western Cape tour group were based at the Ramada Hotel in Ajman, which is a five-star hotel. Four teams participated in the tournament, comprising one under 19, one under 15 and two under 13 teams. The U/19 team played six games, won five and lost in the final to Sri Lanka by 12 runs.
The U/15 team also played six games, winning all their games and beating India in the finals by four wickets. The U/13 ‘A’ team were also victorious in all six games, beating India by three runs in the finals. The U/13 ‘B’ team played five games, winning three and losing two games against the U/13 ‘A’ team by three wickets. Unfortunately, the two U/13 teams from South Africa met in the semi-finals, as they ended first and second in their group. Overall, the winners were the U/15 SA team and U/13 SA team, while the U/19 team were runners-up, having lost in the final against Sri Lanka.
Seedat was effusive in his commendations of the UAE hospitality, the organisational flair of organiser Mr Shezad Altaf from the UAE, and the wonderful support of the touring parents.
“A special thanks to our international partners in the UAE, the sponsors (Muk Holdings, Ramada Hotel Group, Business Houses) and Mr Shafiek Jacobs for organising a successful tour of 104 people. Great synergy, a fantastic tour and well done to the managers and coaches.”
Arrangements are in an advanced stage for a possible tour to the United Kingdom in July for Faroek Seedat as head coach for an U/17 team from South Africa, and preparations for a tour to New Delhi next year are on the cards. In the meantime, Faroek is back to his charges at FNS Cricket and the numbers seem to be growing exponentially.
