A total of 13 St Dominic’s Academy Newcastle pupils participated in round one of the South African Mathematics Olympiad recently.
They were: Mihir Lalbeharie, Nahid Mahomed, Yuren Naidoo, Maseeha Sayed, Megan Furter, Muhammad Dhoda, Surav Anandhaw, Gustav Boshoff, Peggy Hsu, Aadilah Jamaloodeen, Hannah Dhoda, Wynand Esterhuizen and Siyamthanda Mndebele.
Round one consists of 20 multiple choice questions, and pupils are given one hour to compete the test, without calculators.
Four out of five Grade 8s went through to round two.
Megan Furter was the only Grade 9 who wrote, and will also take part in the second round of the olympiad.
Eight of 15 seniors achieved over 50 per cent, qualifying them for round two.
The highest score was 70 per cent, achieved by Yuran Naidoo in Grade 8, Muhammad Dhoda in Grade 10 and Surav Anandhaw in Grade 11.
