Update: Municipal workers dissatisfied with private security

Roads, Hygiene and Engineering Department workers were involved in the protest

Municipal workers staged a protest this morning (Tuesday) at the Public Safety offices to make heard their grievances concerning a private security company that has been employed by Emnambithi/Ladysmith Municipality.

Previously, internal security was in place at the municipality. According to the protesting workers, the municipality say they have run out of funds, yet they acquired the services of a private security company which is more expensive than internal security.

The private security personnel began working yesterday.

Roads, Hygiene and Engineering Department workers were involved in the protest.

The protest is now over and the protesters are back at work. Municipal Manager MP Khathide was present and assured the workers that the municipality would suspend the services of the private security company tomorrow (Wednesday).

The protesters were also complaining about working conditions and demanded that those workers who fall under ‘Job Creation’ be employed permanently.
