Mayoral bodyguards assigned to protect the mayor are to be issued with two high-powered assault rifles.
A tender awarded to a local firearm dealer for close to R20,000 per rifle was approved by council.
This is the first time council has purchased rifles for bodyguards protecting the mayor.
They, however, declined to comment on mayoral security matters, other than stating that the SAPS had uncovered a credible threat against the mayor.
The SAPS referred all comment back to the mayoral office.
