Copper cable thieves arrested after shoot-out with cops
The officers were fired upon as they stopped their vehicle
Two suspects are behind bars after a shoot-out with police officers who pulled over a speeding car.
When the speeding vehicle was stopped, two occupants got out, leaving another two inside.
The officers were fired upon as they stopped their vehicle. They retaliated and successfully arrested the driver, aged 43, and another occupant, aged 23. The 43-year-old sustained a gunshot wound and was taken to hospital.
Two suspects fled into nearby bush. When officers searched the vehicle, they found that the boot was full of copper cable. The vehicle was impounded.
No officers were injured during the incident.
The arrested suspects are due to appear in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing charges of attempted murder and possession of suspected stolen property.
Police are currently tracing the origins of the copper cable.
KZN Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobane commended the officers on the arrests. “We would like to give a stern warning to all copper cable thieves that we shall arrest them, as it is a very costly exercise to restore stolen cables,” she said.
