Venturing into business Nkosikhona Nene of Mazibuko & Nene Optometrists is keeping his eyes on the stars, and his feet on the ground.
This young optometrist in partnership with his fiancé Fezile Mazibuko has recently started a private optometry practice in town.
While he has great ambitions and high expectations for his business, he remains humble and grounded genuinely seeking to connect with his patients and help them see properly.
Having graduated at the University of KwaZulu Natal in 2011, Mr Nene moved around and worked in a few places, including Rustenberg, before returning to KZN and settling in Vryheid.
“In optometry, working under someone else has advantages in that it helps one gain the necessary experience while under a professional’s supervision. But, the disadvantage is that there is a sort of “glass ceiling” in terms of how much you get paid, and this I believe is what encouraged me to start this practice,” said Nkosikhona.
Although he is now madly in love with his career, he admitted that he had never dreamed that he would one day become an optometrist.
“I honestly feel like optometry chose me. Applying for university, I only opted for the course as a final choice incase I did not get accepted for other studies I wanted to pursue. Little did I know, I would be standing here today a qualified optometrist,” he said with a laugh.
Once he began studying optometry, Nkosikhona said that he found himself enjoying the subject a little more everyday.
Describing himself as a person who likes learning, the young doctor said that something about the way optometry branched from being scientific to including business dynamics grasped his full attention.
“I really like working with people, especially the elderly, as they tend to come here with lots of strange ideas and beliefs behind their eye problems. I do not only seek solutions to their problems, I also try to explain as simply as I can so that they may understand where the problem lies,” he said.
Moving forward, this optometrist says that he is prepared to bring the best service to people.
“Customer service is of utmost importance, and I believe in creating good relationships with people,” he concluded.
As far as Nkosikhona can see, the future of his business looks promising in Vryheid.
