Police operation nets 6 suspects
10 unlicensed firearms, consisting of seven pistols and three rifles, were recovered
A recent police operation undertaken by the National Intervention Unit and Public Order Police (POP) in the Uthukela Cluster, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Bhekinkosi Gasa, resulted in six suspects being arrested.
The operation started on Wednesday, April 13, and the arrests were for various crimes such as possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of dagga and possession of suspected stolen property.
10 unlicensed firearms, consisting of seven pistols and three rifles, were recovered, as well as 165 live rounds of ammunition, five bags of dagga, a bag of dagga seeds, 25 goats and five sheep.
The arrests were made in the Upper Tugela area, Bergville, Winterton, Estcourt, Ezakheni and other surrounding areas. The operation is ongoing in the Uthukela area.
The suspects appeared briefly in various magistrate’s courts.
KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded the officers for the recovery of the stolen livestock and unlicensed firearms. “All these firearms will be subjected to ballistics testing to establish whether they were used in any crime in the country. The number of unlicensed firearms recovered proves that police are making sure that all those who possess unlicensed firearms are brought to book,” she said.
