A heinous act of cruelty

A GRUESOME discovery lay in wait for SPCA officials last Friday morning.
Vryheid SPCA’s Cornè Slabbert and his assistant, Mornè, had picked up a stray cat in the Breë Street area and were returning to the SPCA when they made the grisly finding near the corner of Breë and Republic Streets.
A black Labrador Cross lay dead in the street, clearly the victim of a cruel and sinister act. The dog’s legs had been maliciously pried apart and its genitals cut away. The animal’s chest had evidently been cut open, exposing the chest cavity and some of the internal organs. It appears that the culprit also attempted to skin the butchered animal.
Based on evidence at the scene, Cornè approximated that the dog had most likely been killed in the early hours of the morning.
“This animal suffered,” says Cornè, sadness resonating in his voice. “I don’t understand how someone could do this.”
“We cannot have peace among men whose hearts delight in killing any living creature. By every act that glorifies or even tolerates such moronic delight in killing we set back the progress of humanity.” – Rachel Carson (1907-1964)
