Esperanza Special Needs Schools hosted an Autism and Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day on Friday, April 22.
School principal, Jennifer Pillay said the purpose of the day was to spread knowledge about the difficulties pupils faced.
“I think many people, especially children, need to understand why autistic children behave the way they do,” she said.
She explained both autism and cerebral palsy manifest in different ways and affected each child differently.
Mrs Pillay said cerebral palsy was a muscle tone abnormality and uncoordinated control of movements or postures, caused by damage to the brain.
She explained the behaviour of children suffering from cerebral palsy, varied according to the type diagnosed. Some children could walk independently, while others were wheelchair-bound.
To add a festive mood to the day, Blackrock Casino sponsored snacks, face paint and mascots.
Mrs Pillay thanked the team of the Blackrock Casino for their continuous dedicated support.
“The staff, all our children and I appreciate all their efforts and dedication towards our school.”
Esperanza is an independent junior school and a non-profit organisation that relies on fund-raisers and donations from the public.
