Fast-acting cops make arrests and seize firearms

Both suspects appeared in the Weenen Magistrate's Court on Friday on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm

Acting on information received, Pietermaritzburg POP officers working in the Uthukela area arrested two people and recovered three unlicensed firearms in the early hours of Friday morning.

At about 3am, the officers went to the Mngwenya area of Weenen, where a 47-year-old suspect was arrested after he was found in possession of an unlicensed revolver and five rounds of ammunition.

A second suspect, aged 33, was arrested in the same area after he was found in possession of an unlicensed .38 special revolver. In the same vicinity, police also found a rifle and three rounds of ammunition left abandoned.

Both suspects appeared in the Weenen Magistrate’s Court on Friday on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded the officers for the recovery of the unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

“All these firearms will be subjected to ballistics testing to establish whether they were used in any crime in the country.
“The number of unlicensed firearms recovered proves that the police are making sure that all those who possess unlicensed firearms are brought to book,” she said.
