ORIGINALLY from the rural KwaGwebu area just outside of Vryheid, local afropop artist Cebo Dikane says she has always been an entertainer at heart.
“Growing up I used to listen to artists such as the late Brenda Fassie and Chiko Thwala, and just knew deep down in my heart that music was my calling,” said this local artist.
After completing her matric, Cebo went on to become an Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) educator at a school called Sizuzulu.
“My love for music never left me even there as I used to lead choruses during assembly and other events,” she said.
Cebo went on to become an educator at Vryheid Prison and this she said, is where her music began to thrive.
“I taught and was the conductor of a gospel as well as a Zion music group and I enjoyed being there as I was finally getting to do something I liked and was really good at whilst making money on the side,” she said with a smile.
After having a few odd jobs, Cebo eventually settled down and began to fully focus on her music.
“I started composing and writing my music inspired by daily experiences and those of the people around me. Afropop is a very original music genre, we do not imitate nor try to be like one another,” she said.
She released a demo album in 2014, which featured the hit track ‘Ngiyahamba’, a song about a woman who has had enough and wants to leave her abusive husband.
“This song is about the demand for men to respect us as women. We are fragile vessels and should thus be treated with care,” she said.
Radio stations such as Encore FM, Nongoma FM and Mkhondo FM are already giving the hit track great airplay.
The video for this single was shot in April by a local videographer and Cebo said that she hopes to see it being played by various DSTV channels.
Cebo would like to thank all her friends, family and all the other local entertainers for the support they showed her during the shooting of the video.
Looking forward, Cebo said that she hopes she can succeed and make a name for herself as a musician and to someday run her own recording studio.
