Staff and pupils at Muziwephahla Secondary School are grateful to Mrs du Plooy from the Department of Education, who conducted a Mental Health Awareness campaign at the school on Friday.
During the campaign, grade 10 pupils were taught how to identify the symptoms of mental health problems and were made aware of bullying, depression, anxiety and grief. During her presentation, Mrs du Plooy proposed that mental health may even be more important that physical health, explaining that pupils who endured mental problems would never perform according to their maximum potential. Pupils were encouraged not to allow others to belittle or abuse them.
“Be careful how you feel. Your life is shaped by your thoughts,” said Mrs du Plooy, quoting from the Bible.
Principal of the school, Goodenough Xaba, thanked Mrs du Plooy for her thought-provoking presentation and said he hoped the lessons could be extended to the rest of the school, as well as to the staff. Grade 10 manager, Sebenzile Malevu, and teachers, Emmanuel Dubazana and Precious Simelane, also commended Mrs du Plooy for educating and inspiring the pupils.
