Wrong medicine leads to blood tests
The children were sent for blood tests to check if the benzyl benzoate had caused any damage to them.
Two four-year-olds had to have their blood tested, after they were given the incorrect medicine at a Madadeni Clinic on March 18.
It is alleged benzyl benzoate was dispensed to the children instead of cough mixture.
The mother of the children said she had been contacted by the acting PRO of Madadeni Provincial Hospital, who advised her the matter was being being investigated, and apologised for the reckless mistake made by the staff of the clinic.
“She set up a meeting at Madadeni Hostipal where I addressed my concerns with her and other board members. The pharmacist from the clinic was also present and was requested to apologise and and explain why the accident happened,” said the mother.
The children were sent for blood tests to check if the benzyl benzoate had caused any damage to them. After the tests results came back, the mother was left more confused than before.
“They told me there was some abnormality which were picked up in the blood tests, but told me that it was not too serious and would go away. They arranged to see the children in three months again for more blood tests.”
The Newcastle Sun attempted to contact the Madadeni Provincial Hospital’s acting PRO, but no response was received by the time of going to print.
However, Dr Imran Keeka, member of provincial parliament and spokesperson for the Department of Health in the province said he would investigate the case and provide response shortly.
