In the early hours of this morning (Tuesday), Ladysmith police were busy with crime prevention patrols when they came across a vehicle left suspiciously on the roadway along Marula Drive.
The vehicle, a Ford Ranger bakkie, was investigated and it was established that the owner lives around the corner.
Police woke the owner, who was shocked to hear that his vehicle was no longer at his premises. During the night, the gate had been forced open and the vehicle removed from the yard.
It is suspected that the thieves were disturbed by the approaching police, which prompted them to abandon the vehicle and flee into the darkness.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the theft.
