A TRAIL of destruction litters the far corner of Vryheid Cemetery after vandals recently struck again.

Groundskeeper, Bertie Slabbert, points out the afflicted area on Friday morning, where vases have been smashed from the headstones and left in pieces, scattered in the grass between the graves at the eastern corner of Vryheid Cemetery.

“Yesterday, when I left, everything was still fine,” he recalls. “When we got here this morning at around 8am, we saw the damages,” continued Slabbert, referring to himself and the workers who were assisting with digging a grave that morning. “It must have happened last night or in the early hours of this morning…”

Slabbert goes on to say that he has reported the incidents of vandalism to the municipality, but no further action has been taken.
