Refuse collection is under scrutiny, following complaints from residents in the Lennoxton area.
Both Freddy Teeka and Rajen Sivanannan expressed concern at municipal trucks and workers collecting black bin bags as early as 5.30am in the vicinity of St Thomas Street, stating it was unfair to residents.
An email outlining the complaint was sent to officials earlier in May. “Most of the residents in these winter months have to start running helter [skelter] to put out the refuse at that time…” read a portion of the email from Mr Teeka.
Responding to the matter, Waste Management Superintendent, Doctor Thava Kelly said refuse removal services began at 6am in all areas of Newcastle West.
The staff in this department, she explained, clocked in at 6am. “The service is based on availability of reliable fleet and staff to complete a workaround.” Although a response was received, both Mr Teeka and Mr Sivanannan were dissatisfied with the explanation given.
However, the collection times have reportedly improved since. “On Friday, the refuse truck came past my place on Viola Street at 6.05am. It’s slightly better than 5.48am last week.”
While it is believed the municipality plans to reduce overtime expenditure, Dr Kelly said quite simply the service needed to be completed. “If we have the resources, then we get the job done as effectively as possible.”
