‘SPCA Whistleblower’ barking up the wrong tree

VRYHEID SPCA has recently come under attack from members of the community, who appear intent on throwing the organisation into disrepute with accusations including unnecessary killing of animals, drug abuse, violence and even allegations of sexual misconduct.

When Shaun Rielly, the “whistleblower” and former employee of the SPCA was interviewed by community activist, Magda Viktor, he responded with allegations of drug abuse and violence against Cornè Slabbert and Rizwana Moosa. Both parties willingly volunteered to be tested for drugs. Both of them were cleared of the drug allegations when their test results came back negative.

The ongoing negative posts on social media have persisted since an animal was euthanised in an emergency procedure by Trainee Inspector, Cornè Slabbert, earlier this year, which was described as “overkilling” of the animal by the former high school teacher who appears to be at the forefront of the attack on the SPCA.

Investigations were done into the incident and NSPCA confirmed that Slabbert was not guilty of any misconduct. The case was closed.

Throughout the onslaught, Slabbert has remained composed, despite numerous threats from the public, including his own father, who has allegedly threatened to assault him to the point that Slabbert even applied for a protection order against him.

According to a report by Natalie Meyer, Vryheid SPCA’s Treasurer, “Shaun was dismissed when he, himself, became so violent that Link Up Security was called in to prevent him from assaulting a staff member. The SAPS had to be called in too and Shaun was ordered to leave the premises.”

Although Vryheid SPCA has been warned that two more “whistleblowers” will be brought to light, the committee encourages anyone who has an issue with any of their staff to come forward with written and signed statements so that they may investigate.
