The weekend saw Upper Tugela, Ematsheni and Bergville police arrest a total of four suspects for possession of unlicensed firearms, while Ladysmith SAPS arrested one suspect for handling a firearm while under the influence of liquor.
The suspects arrested for possession appeared in court yesterday (Monday).
On Friday, a 70-year-old man was arrested in the Stulwane area of Bergville. He was found in possession of an unlicensed 9mm Norinco Star firearm and 18 rounds of ammunition.
On the same day, a 44-year-old man was arrested in the Ngoba area of Upper Tugela. He was found in possession of an unlicensed 9mm Norinco firearm and two rounds of ammunition.
Then, on Sunday, a 29-year-old man was arrested in the Ebusingatha area of Ematsheni. He was found in possession of an unlicensed Star pistol and 15 rounds of ammunition.
During the early hours of Monday morning, a 43-year-old man was arrested in the Moyeni area of Upper Tugela. He was found in possession of an unlicensed 9mm Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
In a separate incident in Ladysmith, a 39-year-old man was arrested on Sunday at about 6pm at the Kandahar Avenue sports ground. He was alleged to have been firing shots on the field while watching a soccer match.
On arrival, police found that the suspect was under the influence of liquor and had been assaulted by the community. He was arrested and charged for handling a firearm while under the influence of liquor. He is currently in hospital under police guard.
