Councillors conspicuous in their absence

ABAQULUSI Municipality is under stress as far as finances go.

ABAQULUSI Municipality is under stress as far as finances go.

This was the general essence of last Tuesday’s Budget Roadshow meeting held at the Library Hall. The meeting was held to discuss the sombre state of affairs that is the municipal budget for 2016/2017. AbaQulusi Mayor, Cllr Patience N Khaba, addressed those in attendance with the proposed figures for the coming financial year.

Conspicuously absent, Acting Municipal Manager, AB Mnikathi’s non-attendance left the Mayor to field several questions, regarding the absence of certain councillors as well as the Acting MM, from the concerned public.

Cllr Khaba took these questions in her stride, however, pointing out, “I am the Mayor, not the Speaker. I cannot say why certain councillors and the Acting MM are not present. All councillors report to the office of the Speaker.”

“If she [Mnikathi] were here, I would offer her the opportunity to explain. I don’t want to take the role of the MM.”

A more detailed breakdown of the budget will be available in next week’s edition of the Vryheid Herald.
