“The reaction was really good. Promotion began on Tuesday with flyers and through social media, and we had a lot of response,” Courtney explained.

Barmaid tips, raffle ticket sales and entrance fees all tallied up in aid of Home Meah, while an anonymous donor added a further R1 500 to the kitty.

Courtney said this showed the importance of backing a known cause.

“Causes for children always get people involved.”

Earlier in the year, the Miss Newcastle contestants visited Home Meah during the pageant build-up, and it was then Courtney had an epiphany.

“I thought that with funding and due attention, it would boom and the facility could help even more children. You’ve got to help the children.”

Speaking on Monday, Courtney said the event was more successful than she had envisaged, with more than R7 000 in donations and funds received.

“I am overwhelmed by the support we received!”

Pageant First Princess, Charne Rodgers was in full support of her cousin, and commented the hosting of a charity event at a popular destination such as Melos was a great idea.

“You always get people in and there were lots of donations. Many people were spreading the word, and in that way it was great.”
