HEIDELBERG – In a combined operation, Heidelberg SAPS and Metro Police apprehended two alleged robbers on the road between the N3 and Rensburg on Tuesday.
This followed an armed robbery that occurred in the early hours of the morning of May 26 at a residence in Newcastle. The robbers stole various household items and fled the scene in the home owner’s Mazda CX-5.

With various law enforcement departments working together as a well-oiled team, the stolen vehicle was tracked to the weigh bridge on the N3 outside Heidelberg. In hot pursuit, the police flying squad and Metro Police gained ground with the suspects. When the culprits realised they where being followed, they stopped the vehicle, jumped out and ran towards Zuid Street in the Heidelberg suburb of Rensburg.
Heidelberg police and the Heidelberg Community Policing Forum (CPF) joined in the search for the suspects.
One of the suspects was arrested shortly thereafter, while the other was apprehended in an outbuilding on a smallholding near the old cemetery in Rensburg.
Police recovered the stolen vehicle with all the loot inside, and seized an unlicensed firearm.
