Five alleged taxi ‘hit-men’ were arrested by an elite team of officers in Gauteng on Monday. The men face charges of murder and one attempted murder case linked to ongoing taxi violence in the Bergville area.
Early this year, we reported on a smouldering taxi faction feud that erupted into a full-scale wild-west style clan war, leaving five people dead. The war caught Bergville police off-guard (at the time) as they scrambled to restore order in the Stulwane area of Bergville.
The Uthukela Cluster Crime Intelligence Unit played a vital role in the tracing of five suspects alleged to be involved in cases of murder and attempted murder in the Stulwane area of Bergville.
The five were arrested in Gauteng on Monday, May 30.
Officers from Bergville SAPS and Newcastle POP were assisted by Katlehong TRT and, receiving guidance from the Uthukela Cluster Crime Intelligence Unit, the group traced and arrested the five suspects, who were found together in a house at Sebokeng, Gauteng.
During the arrests, police seized an unlicensed Vektor Z88 pistol and 18 rounds of ammunition, as well as explosives.
The suspects, aged between 25 and 35 years old, are currently facing charges in Gauteng relating to the possession of the firearm, ammunition and explosives.
Arrangements are currently underway to bring them to KZN to face charges of murder and attempted murder in Bergville. Thus far, the five suspects face four counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.
