NEWCASTLE – Celebrating 16 years of local government, Newcastle played host to KZN MEC of Health, Doctor Sibongiseni Dhlomo, and the Deputy Minister of Energy, Barbara Thompson.
The visit of the two dignitaries on Sunday formed part of the celebrations of the dawn of democracy in South Africa.

“While we have had democracy for 22 years, the first few years were dedicated to resolving the mistakes of the past, so it was deemed that the official celebrations should reflect 16 years of freedom,” said Newcastle Mayor, Afzul Rehman, during a meeting at the Ward 3 War Room.
Ward 3 residents were thrilled to see Cllr Rehman, Amajuba District Mayor Jabu Khumalo with Dr Dhlomo and Ms Thompson, as a torch of hope burned in the War Room.
“We received the flame this morning, which is currently going across the country as part of the celebrations for democracy, which was brought about by our freedom to be able to vote and and play a role in the governance of the country,” said Cllr Rehman.
As Ward 3 residents listened intently, Cllr Rehman explained the main purpose of the visit by the dignitaries and the municipality to Suryaville, before visiting Madadeni and oSizweni, was to show empathy.
“We want to know your problems. We don’t want just statistics; we want to know the families and what obstacles they are facing. We want to be involved,” he said.
Dr Dhlomo believes War Rooms play a major role in the upliftment of society as a whole.
“War Rooms should know who is battling and who needs assistance. There should be no child who is malnourished,” he emphasised.
Dr Dhlomo said the ANC had done a substantial amount of work to improve conditions in the country over the years.
“I am not saying that we are perfect, but things are happening. Those people who are toyi-toying, have simply not benefited yet and have seen others benefit, but we will get to them soon,” he assured.
Ms Thompson agreed with Dr Dhlomo.
“We are not perfect and mistakes have been made, but don’t be mislead by others.”
As the local government elections loom, Ms Thompson believes unrest is caused by people outside the ANC.
“The burning of the schools and universities is a well-planned and well-funded campaign – don’t be mistaken.”
While there are challenges that need to be resolved, she is convinced the country will prosper if people unite for the greater good.
