While Estcourt and surrounding areas have not experienced the full might of the drought that has affected other areas of KwaZulu-Natal and the country, water service provider Uthukela District Municipality (UDM) is intensifying water restrictions.
In the most recent media statement, the district municipality reiterates their call for residents to use water sparingly and emphasises their call for water restrictions in towns including Estcourt, Winterton, Bergville, Weenen and Ladysmith.
Rules have been put in place to monitor the imposed restrictions, although this has been in the past shown to be infrequently, if ever monitored.
UDM’s spokesperson Jabulani Mkhonza outlined the following water restrictions:
• No watering of gardens
• No filling of swimming pools
• No use of sprinkler systems
• No washing of vehicles using hosepipes at home
• No illegal or unmetered car wash businesses allowed
Mr Mkhonza added that water supply will be shut off at certain times for both business and domestic consumers.
“As part of intensifying water restrictions, high volume water users such as car wash and car dealer businesses are requested not to wash cars for a period of two days per week. This request applies to car wash business in all towns, townships and rural areas in uThukela District,” he added.
The water restrictions will be in effect from June 20 until further notice.
UDM warns that any person found contravening the water restrictions will be liable to a R2 000 fine and that spot checks will be conducted.
