Update: Shock as neighbours are arrested for woman’s murder

An intelligence-driven operation led by the Crime Intelligence Gathering Unit (CIG), K9 Unit and detectives resulted in a breakthrough in the murder case

Two suspects were arrested this afternoon (Tuesday) for the brutal murder of 67-year-old Zarina Moola.

The elderly woman was found dead by her domestic worker on Friday morning in her home in Gumtree Road, Smartiesville. Mrs Moola was a widow and lived alone in her home. It is believed that she had given her domestic worker an extra set of keys for the house, as she was going to hospital on the morning she was found murdered.

An intelligence-driven operation led by Warrant Officer Gary Ramdheen, the Crime Intelligence Gathering Unit (CIG), K9 Unit and detectives resulted in a breakthrough in the murder case.

Officers followed up on leads over the weekend, which led to two suspects, aged 26 and 27, being arrested today. The two men, who live in Gumtree Road, were taken in for questioning this morning.

During cross-examination, the men complied with the officers and agreed to point out where the murder weapon was and how they gained entry to the house.

Elderly Mrs Moola was found in her bed with multiple stab wounds. It appears  she was asleep when her attacker/s brutally murdered her.

Mrs Moola was well liked within the community, and described as a humble and helpful person. “Why would anyone do this to an elderly person who cannot fight back? Zarina was harmless and did not deserve to die like this!” said a shocked neighbour.

At this stage, the motive appears to be robbery. Police are investigating a case of murder and robbery.
