IF all goes according to plan, AbaQulusi Community Radio Station could be hitting the airwaves by the end of August.

Despite several setbacks since its inception in February 2011, the registered non profit organisation is all systems go, according to a report from the AGM, which was held last Sunday at the Vryheid Library Hall to address the progress and constitution of AbaQulusi Community Radio Station.

“We have had difficulties for all these years since this mission was started,” it stated. “The station, as an idea, was started by certain committed community members. However, along the way, we had some diminishing and new ones emerging to carry the idea forward. We are glad to indicate that the hope still exists and we are right on the finish line, therefore we can’t falter now.”

The long awaited community radio station will be broadcast on the offered Frequency Modulation of 90.7MHz and will reach the entire AbaQulusi region, which includes Bhekuzulu, Vryheid, Mondlo, Bhekmtheto, Coronation, Louwsburg, Kwakhambi, Gluckstadt and other areas on the outskirts of AbaQulusi, an area covering approximately 4 185 square kilometres and an estimated population of 247 775.

According to the AGM report, the station proposes to offer “an assertive, impartial platform that shall aid the development of communities, protect human rights, be beyond reproach in its integrity and in upholding human dignity.”
