NEWCASTLE – A deadline of July 8 has been given to residents, who have yet to recommend which candidate they want to see fill the shoes of outgoing Public Protector, Advocate Thuli Madonsela.
The list of 59 nominees was made public on June 28.
These names were also presented to a special ad hoc committee, which will select Adv. Madonsela’s successor, once her term ends in October.
The names and CVs of candidates are available on the Parliamentary website and various platforms.

In Parliament yesterday (June 28), chairperson of the ad hoc committee‚ Makhosi Khoza told reporters 73 applicants were initially received, a list since narrowed down to 59 names.
According to national media, notable nominations which fell away, include former President, Thabo Mbeki, former First Lady, Graca Machel‚ popular advocate, Gerrie Nel and former Minister of Finance, Nhlanhla Nene.
The committee will convene after July 8 to discuss the way forward and decided on the number of shortlisted candidates.
Other notable nominees include High Court in Cape Town Judge, Siraj Desai‚ legal analyst, Pierre de Vos‚ Advocate Dali Mpofu‚ Advocate Loyiso Mpumlwana‚ Phillip Dexter and author, Pregs Govender.
