Dundee’s wrestling heroes have returned home triumphant after competing in the African Championships in Algeria.
Edrich Nortje and Wiehan Whelan took on the best wrestlers that Africa had to offer and showed that they had the class to compete with them. Edrich finished second in the u/17 50-54kg division while Wiehan placed fourth in the u/20 69-74kg division.
Both wrestlers described the competition as very tough, especially the competitors from Egypt who are generally considered Africa’s best. The duo spent 10 days in the capital Algiers and while they didn’t get to go out much, they did get a chance to do a bit of sight seeing and sample the local cuisine. The food took some getting used to while the water was not safe to drink. Bottled water is used for everything, including brushing your teeth. Edrich has now qualified for the World Championship in Georgia and will be jetting off in six weeks time. “I’m very excited and have already begun my training now,” he said. Both wrestlers encouraged more youngsters to take up the sport, citing the benefits of it.
“It promotes self defense and helps you lead a better, more healthier lifestyle, “said Wiehan.
” It keeps you healthy and fit but takes a lot of hard work and dedication. You have to be disciplined, ” Edrich added.
The duo have proved that that discipline pays off as they continue to fly the flag high for the area and take their opponents down to the mat.
