Ichthus’s record haul of five gold medals at expo

Recommended for the International Science Expo in Johannesburg is Anél de Goede and Thayne Tiley

Ten Grade 7 learners from Ichthus participated in the annual Eskom Science Expo in Ladysmith on Friday, July 29. For the last six months all the learners worked diligently and conducted the necessary research for their projects. Each learner brought home medals for their projects, with one project, “Bread Dough – No Go!” by Anél de Goede and Thayne Tiley, being recommended for the International Science Expo in Johannesburg.

The projects were as follows: A gold medal for: Evade Evaporation by Tiana Maritz and Matthew Oosthuizen – A study on the most effective way to prevent evaporation of dams. A bronze medal for: Bread Dough – No Go! by Anél de Goede and Thayne Tiley – To spread awareness of “Calcium proportionate” in store bought bread. A gold medal for: Detergent Impact by Nothile Mgabhi and Bianca Meintjes – To test the impact of soap on the environment. A gold medal for: Autism Sleep Struggle by Michiel Strydom – Research on how to help Autistic children to fall asleep at night.

A gold medal for: The Best Seat to Concentrate by Sisanda Mthombeni and Ntumiseng Motloung – This project was aimed at determining whether children struggle to concentrate in a certain position in a classroom. A gold medal for: Paper Bricks for Fuel by Sphesihle Maphalala and Zoe Cochrane – If waste paper can be recycled and formed into bricks and then used as an alternative to burning wood and coal that will cause less or no damage to the environment.

Category winners were Tiana Maritz and Matthew Oosthuizen in the Earth Science category and Sphesihle Maphalala and Zoe Cochrane in the Sustainable Development category. Congratulations to all the learners and thank you to the staff and parents who assisted these learners! Soli Deo Gloria!
