Murdered Newcastle electoral candidate wins Ward

A replacement for slain Ward 6 elected candidate Thembi Mbongo is yet to be identified.

NEWCASTLE – Gunned down Ward 6 ANC Candidate, Thembi Mbongo came out top in the August 3 local elections as she secured a victory for the ruling party.

According to the IEC, a process will be undertaken to find a suitable replacement for the slain candidate, although the replacement will not be immediately identified so soon after elections.

The incident where Mbongo was shot dead in her home in full view of her children on July 2, is still under-investigation by the Hawks, and the suspects are still at large.

In KwaZulu-Natal, there have been a reported 14 alleged political killings in the run-up to elections.
